Howard Wayne's work is an intuitive process-led investigation into the mediums of painting and drawing. Wayne seeks to examine the limits and possibilities of the mediums and what art can be. Drawn to pattern, repetition, gesture, space and anti-art, his non-representational works increasingly incorporating colour but maintain an emphasis on mark-making and the possibilities of drawing. A strong background in printmaking continues to inform his current practice.
After a successful early career as a fashion designer/maker and screen printer with his own label and retail outlets, Wayne began the study of Painting and Drawing at the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney in 1990. After graduating in 1993, he then studied Contemporary Visual Culture at The University of Sydney.
In 1995 Howard studied at The Warringah Printmakers Studio, Sydney. Since then Wayne, in addition to raising his four children, has held numerous group and solo exhibitions and won and been a finalist in awards, including being shortlisted for the Dobell Drawing Prize in 2004. His work is held in public and private collections. He is currently completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (painting) at the National Art School, Sydney.

ARTIST STATEMENT
My work is an intuitive, process-led investigation into the medium of Painting and Drawing. I am seeking to examine the limits and possibilities of the medium and question what is painting today? The materiality of paint and my manipulation of it is my subject. Actually its wrong to say painting is "about" something, it's the doing it itself that interests me, it's incarnating. Painting has endless information about creation in general and transforms this code of creation it refers to into what we see on the canvas.
